RECORD ANCHORS

alamoudi’s · video · future

The record for NIUN yields three coordinates specific to its premise—alamoudi’s, video, and future. That vocabulary places creation at the center and gives creation its dominant tension. It establishes a documentary baseline, not a borrowed score; criticism must still ask what the form does with that material.

NIUN brings creation into contact with creation through cinematic narrative. That intersection is our Fresh Take: judge the premise less by its familiarity than by how precisely that combination makes its conflict legible. The existing editorial note adds this view: A strong, singular piece of cinema driven by genuine directorial conviction.

NIUN (2018) arrives with the coordinates of a cinema film situated in 2010s cinema. The record credits Michael Mogensen with the direction and places its documented performers in the foreground. With an undocumented running time, the useful question is not to invent an invisible intention, but to notice how these documented choices shape audience expectations before the first frame.

Read as cinematic narrative, the film carries the pressure of creation. Creation is not merely an outcome to admire; it becomes labor, discipline, and sometimes a strategy for surviving the gaze of others. The most precise critical test is therefore the human cost of the creative act beyond its result. The starting point is neither automatic approval nor suspicion. It is curiosity about construction: how do familiar elements combine to produce a particular voice, experience, or resistance?

The counterpoint reads the work less as pure expression than as the place where the artist arranges what cannot be said directly. Instead of asking whether the film confirms the expected story of creation, the sharper question is whether it changes the person, place, or institution with the power to define it. The counterpoint replaces immediate reaction with a map: decisions, consequences, resistance.

THE VERDICT, REFRAMED

The twist: replace the rating reflex with close attention to decisions. Here, creation changes meaning under the pressure of creation.

THE DOCUMENTARY STARTING POINT

Made in collaboration with American artist Michael Mogensen, Alamoudi’s video NIUN (2018) is inspired by thirteenth-century Persian physician, geographer, and writer Zakariya al-Qazwini’s story, Awaj bin Anfaq, which considered one of the first works of science fiction, about an alien who visits Earth to study the oddities of human behavior. Alamoudi’s video follows two extra-terrestrial protagonists (NIUN 1 and NIUN 2) who claim the desert as their own and begin to lay down the foundation for a new civilization. Together, the pair devise seven essential components that will fortify a prosperous future: energy, water, mobility, biotechnology, entertainment, technology, and manufacturing. Together and in sync, the outlanders chant mantras—ardi (“my land”), noor (“light”), hajira (“traveller”), and hajirati (“my rock”)—that, in the artist’s view, reinforce the importance of language and open communication in cultivating the future.
